- As a writer, I check my facts, find a new and fresh angle
to stories and add a creative flair to my stories. I am dogged in pursuing
stories, and have been known to get a few exclusive stories. I am not afraid
to ask the tough questions and seek the answers that my readers want.
- As Chief Sub-Editor and Assistant Editor, I have been very good at meeting
deadlines, expanding on stories, coming up with story ideas, getting the best from
my writers, meeting very tight deadlines, tightening up copy and adding focus to
stories. I am also good at working with photos and graphics and coming up
with headlines, captions and graphics ideas.
I am a good leader, great at teamwork, and do not waste time beating around the bush.
If a job needs to get done, I am usually the one to do it. I have dealt with staff
on many different levels – talking to them as a friend, telling them off
as a superior and even inspiring them to get the job done. I am a fair
leader: I compliment staff on work well done, and advice them on how they
can improve when the work seems lacking.
I am versatile and have worked on several different pullouts: Metro where I
covered daily events in Malaysia's capital city; Sunday Star where I covered
the arts (visual as well as performing); Section 2 where I covered
features of all kinds (arts, social issues, environment, books, science,
health, sports, children, the disabled, even cooking!); and In.Tech where I covered features on technology as well as review products (phones
and software). I have also worked with magazines such as Personal Money, FourFourTwo and MIS Asia.
- I am a go-getter. When I want to learn something, I absorb all the reading
materials I can get my hands on, and ask people who know about these
things. As such, I am self-taught on a number of subjects: I learnt art
(studying from books and from talking with artists); I learnt sports
(mostly from a love of football, but also from reading books, magazines
and newspapers).
Most notably I taught myself HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and with help
from friends and books and a process of trial and error through having my own
websites.
- I am creative and have written children’s stories
which I have put up online at my website called
Beebo in DeliLand (www.beebo.com.my). Because of my love for children, writing and
encouraging the creative process, I have developed the site to include stories
by Malaysian children.
- I developed the Beebo in DeliLand website all by myself. I learnt
Microsoft FrontPage to develop the site, later using Notepad to
do the occasional updates through hardcoding.
- I am extremely resourceful. This has come in handy throughout the course
of my work. I am able to find online and in hard copy, facts and details that
seem to evade others. This is because of my ability to think
on my feet and my dogged determination in finding what I'm looking for.
- I have contacts in Malaysia in the arts, technology, publishing, restaurant,
insurance, tobacco and disabled communities. I also have contacts in the United States
in the newspaper and technology communities.
I am a good photographer
and have on many occasions taken photographs for the stories that I've written.
- I am interested in technology, books, arts, music, disabled, children,
health and world events.
- Currently I am based in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. I am willing to travel if
flight tickets and accommodation are provided. Otherwise, I am online
every day, and hence the world is always at my fingertips.
- I have travelled to Singapore, Australia, China, Maldives and France, and have no
problems travelling alone.
