Star, the No 1 newspaper in Malaysia, as a trainee reporter and moved up ranks to cadet
reporter, reporter, sub-editor, Assistant Chief Sub-Editor, Chief
Sub-Editor and finally to Assistant Editor.

Managed a group of 20 reporters and sub-editors. This has included administrative work, planning stories, working with reporters on story ideas, working with the sub-editors on layout of the pages, editing copy, checking the final copy before it goes to print, uploading stories to the Web.
- Chief Sub-Editor and Assistant Chief Sub-editor, The Star, In.Tech, January 2000 - December 2003.
Oversaw two sub-editors who reported to me and made sure the
production aspects of In.Tech moved smoothly. This included working
with artists (turning writers' ideas into graphics), photographers
(planning photo shoots), advertising staff (liaising with them on
advertisements and where to place the ads, juggling ads to optimise
editorial space), production staff (to work around and through printing
necessities and technical constraints and problems). It also involved
Desktop Publishing (laying out pages) for the print publication, as well as
uploading the stories online. During this time, I was also helping the Editor
and Assistant Editor edit stories while I also wrote features and product
(hardware and software) reviews.
- Managed the weekly Starchild column in The Star, Section 2 (the features pullout), 1990 - April 1996.
Children below 12 sent in their essays and these were edited and prepared for print.
- Weekly Columnist for Around the Schools weekly column, The Star, Section 2, 1990 - 1994.
Reported on various happenings and events at primary and secondary schools in Malaysia, as
well as colleges and universities based in the country.
- Managed the weekly book reviews pages in The Star Section 2, 1992 - 1994.
Liaised with local distributors to obtain books for reviews, as well as co-ordinating with reviewers and editing reviews.
- Contributor, The Star, Arts Pages, 1990 - 1994.
Filling the arts pages which involved attending and writing about artists, art exhibitions and even plays.
This included reviewing art exhibitions.
