BLAST FROM THE PAST
Sunday Star , StarMag, July 17, 2005

ON the second floor of Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, is Home Circle. It is on the same floor as other furniture and home furnishing shops. But there’s something about Home Circle that makes it different from those shops.

HOME CIRCLE
Home Circle's window display sees replicas of designer chairs of the past.

For one thing, in Home Circle’s window display, you’ll see some out of this world chairs that look like they were taken from the set of an Austin Powers movie – among them are replicas of Eero Aarnio’s Ball Chair and Bubble Chair as well as Charles and Ray Eames’ Le Chaise.

Besides replicas of designer chairs, the year-old shop also offers items such as clocks, coasters, glasses, frames and lamps.

Lai Kian, one of the partners of Home Circle, says, “When I started this business you could hardly find these kinds of furniture. But now a lot of these shops are coming up. Maybe there is a market now.

“(Retro) furniture was designed a long time ago, in fact, the designers may not be around anymore but a lot of people still like it because these are designer pieces,” she explains.

Home Circle’s target customers are mainly designers and house developers who need furnishings for their show units and offices. The shop also gets retail customers who need to furnish their outlets and cafés.

In fact, you might have seen some of Home Circle’s chairs in TV commercials and print advertisements. Advertising companies sometimes approach the shop wanting to rent the chairs for a shoot.

According to Lai Kian, the furniture comes from Europe and Australia, while the accessories are from Holland and Britain.

Typically, the shop brings in just one set of furniture for selected designs. Customers who want to buy that piece can either buy the display unit or wait one month for the order to be shipped.

Home Circle hopes to open another outlet in the heart of KL by the end of this year.

• Home Circle (03-2284-2243) is at S-063, 2nd Floor, Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.
