GO ONLINE FOR RETRO DECORATION
The Star, In.Tech, Sept 6, 2005

IF You’re into all things retro – from peace posters to 70s phones and ashtrays – yet can’t seem to find what you’re looking for in the local shops, why not go online?

Yes, the price may be higher (when you add the cost of shipping), but hey if you gotta have that beaded curtain, you just gotta have that beaded curtain.

Here’s a list of some sites where you may just find what you’re looking for:

Retro@home
(www.retroathome.com)
This site offers furniture (see accompanying picture of a magenta Overman sofa), a vintage Vespa (ooh!), storage units, accessories and even Tiki memorabilia!

They’re quite pricey for us as it’s all in US dollars. Plus, if you’re buying something big, the shipping cost and import tax might max out your credit card.

Having said that, you have to check out the Vespa.

RetroOnline
(www.retroonline.com)
Curtains, lighting and beaded curtains, anyone?

A lot of shops and even sellers at online auction site eBay (www.ebay.com) claim to sell retro curtains, but seriously not all of them are.

This site is a rarity because it sells cloth and beaded curtains – both of which look authentically retro.

The cloth versions feature wavy designs in the typical colours of the 60s and 70s – red, pink, apple green, brown, black and white.

The beaded curtains come in circles and squares and even circles within squares. They’re in orange / red, orange / yellow, black / white, blue / white and chrome colours.

VintageLooks
(www.vintagelooks.com)
This shop has retro-looking clothes (for men and women) – it’s not stuff from the thrift shop though, in case you’re wondering.

It also has furniture, clocks, lamps, kitchenware and decorative items.

What I love about this site are the appliances and electronic items – a turquoise hair-drier which has a stand, funky mod alarm clock and retro bright red phones.

But what really caught my attention and had me screaming “I want!” was the vintage deco style box phone. It’s a wooden box with a phone inside.

Imagine the faces of visitors to your home when the phone rings, and you coolly open the box and answer the phone: “Hello? Yes, Agent 99? The Chief is looking for me?”

Cool Stuff
(www.coolstuffnola.com/index.htm)
This site offers furniture, lighting, paintings, accessories and other stuff.

Ooh, how about the RCA aluminium portable radio? It is supposedly still in working order.

I really like the lamp with red and orange mod wavy lines and the Sputnik chandelier.

Although, I have to say I’m sure I’ve seen the Sputnik chandelier selling here, so do check out the local lighting shops before ordering online. It should be cheaper.

Do Wah Diddy
(www.dowahdiddy.com)
This site offers furniture, collectibles, memorabilia from the past, jewellery, neckties and lots of kitschy stuff.

Check out the miniature designer chairs – they’re so cute, and hey, if you can’t get the real life-size ones, why not get a collection of the miniature kind?

The flower power place mats look really cool too. They remind me of the art deco stickers my sisters used to stick on their schoolbags. Groovy, baby!

This site also offers some really funky sunglasses – you can look like the receptionist in some 1950s movie (frames that turn up at the edges) or an Elton John-wannabe.

This is by no means a definitive list. There are lots of websites offering vintage and retro stuff. We can’t promise they will all ship to Malaysia or how secure the sites are, so take your time, surf around and check them all out carefully.

If you decide not to order online, perhaps these sites will give you some idea of how to decorate your house/room and if you’re lucky you might even be able to find what you’re looking for right here.
