DO THE HUSTLE
Sunday Star , StarMag, July 17, 2005

IF you’re looking for home furnishings reminiscent of the 1970s when disco, Afros and Saturday Night Fever were in, then hustle on down to Room Interior Products.

Although this shop has all kinds of contemporary furnishings and cool stuff for the home, it also has some 1970s stuff – such as a portable battery-operated disco ball, beaded curtains and pillowcases that encourage love, not war.

Room Interior Products is not new. The outlet in 1 Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, has been open for a year now, and the ones in Suria KLCC and Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur have been open for six months.

Sarah Geh, assistant marketing manager, explains the concept of the shop: “We call it a designer house because we offer different kinds of designer products. For example, we have Mr P, Umbra, and Room Interior products. We take these designer items and sell them at our shop so that we offer a wider range of products to our customers.”

Geh says the shop caters mostly to working adults and young professionals. Interior designers also purchase items for showrooms. Occasionally there are companies that buy in bulk – gifts to be given away at company functions.

“Some items look like they are from the hippie era – some are practical but a bit pricey. Normally, foreigners would buy these items because they feel it is practical. However, Malaysians tend to look at the price and decide that they don’t really need it,” says Geh.

Knowing which items to stock is not so easy as you’re never sure which items will sell.

“Whatever products we bring in must be the latest, coolest designs,” she says.

Currently, the best selling products are pillowcases that come in wavy retro designs. The items in the shop are sourced from Europe, Thailand and Australia.

Room Interior Products plans to open a shop in Singapore soon.

•Room Interior Products (www.roominteriorproducts.com) is at Suria KLCC, Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, and 1Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.
