TUNE IN TO THE SPACE AGE
Sunday Star , StarMag, July 17, 2005

TUCKED away in half a shop lot in Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya, is Space Décor. If you walk too fast as you head towards the Atria Shopping Centre or if you blink as you pass by, you might miss it.

SPACE DECOR
The Space Decor shop offers paintings and clocks among other retro items.

The door is often locked and it looks like the shop is closed. If that is the case, pop over to the pet shop next door. Both shops are owned by Brian Fang and his wife.

Inside Space Décor is a treasure trove of retro and Space Age (1970s) home furnishings.
Among the interesting items are the ashtrays, clocks, phones, abstract artwork and beaded curtains.

Fang, business development director of Space Décor, says collecting retro items is a favourite past time of his.

“I like retro and funky things – they add colour to a house. I hope to have a lot of retro furnishings in my own house one day,” he says.

While sourcing for designer retro items from Europe can be expensive, Fang has found a way around it by looking for things in Hong Kong.

BEADED CURTAIN
The beaded curtain on sale at Space Decor.

Most of his customers like the plastic beaded curtains – with abstract designs and retro brown and green colours – and even the cool-looking clocks.

Being the practical businessman, Fang admits to not buying from the United States or Europe, as it is just too expensive.

What does Fang do with items that don’t sell?

“I take them home,” the retro enthusiast says with a grin.

If you’re into retro furnishings, better make a beeline to Space Décor soon before everything ends up in Fang’s house instead!

• Space Décor (03-7724 2708) is at No. 11, Jalan SS22/23, Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya.
